Jan 17, 2014  Each card reader can act as a stand alone USB 3.0 reader which I found to be a really great option. If you travel a lot, you wont take the hub with you. Satechi USB-C MicroSD and SD Card Reader — $15 This small and compact hub connects to a single USB-C port on the new MacBook Pro and has microSD and SD card readers.

A great all-in-one reader for all kinds of data transfer.

On any given day, I am using several USB devices and loading and unloading SD cards into my computer. I have a 2014 MacBook Pro, which means that I have 2-USB 3.0 ports, 2-Thunderbolt ports, 1-HDMI port and 1-SD Card reader. This is great by today’s standards as it seems that laptop manufacturers are more and more driven to provide less and less ports for users. This has been something I’ve struggled with since the iMac was first released. In trying to be minimalistic, I feel like Apple took away some vital features that users needed to be productive. Now, I am forced to augment my MacBook Pro with a multi-port hub so that I have a fast, convenient option for transferring data. My hub of choice? The 3-Port USB 3.0 Hub with Card Reader from Sabrent.

The 3-Port USB 3.0 Hub with Card Reader provides 3-USB 3.0 ports along with an all-in-one reader for flash memory cards. It has built-in support for card readers – SD, SDHC, Micro SD, and CF. All the ports are ‘plug & play’ and hot-swappable. And, because it’s utilizing USB 3.0 technology, you can transfer data up to 5Gbps. The case is built from aluminum and has a brushed silver finish to match the style of Apple computers. The USB cable extends approximately 12 inches in length, which is ideal for having on your desk throughout the day or even tossing in your laptop bag so that you have it on the go.

FIRST IMPRESSIONS
I continue to be impressed with the products that are put out by Sabrent. And this hub is no different. I love that it has the aluminum finish to match my laptop and that it’s completely mobile because of its size. The only thing I wish the hub had was a small carrying pouch or case that would make it even more transportable.

UTILITY
I am amazed at the difference in speed between the different USB rankings. I have an SD card reader that connects via my USB port and it’s been a life saver for me. I have a very low-profile SD card that I use as additional hard drive space since I only have a 128GB hard drive on my MacBook Pro. Because I am using it as such, I have my SD card port occupied 99% of the time. This is where the USB/SD card reader has come in handy. It has worked well, but it’s not as fast as it could be. When I used the Sabrent hub the first time to transfer photos from my SD card, I was amazed at how quickly the data transferred. It is a true USB 3.0 connection and is a fantastic upgrade from the method I’ve been using.

CONCLUSIONS
I can highly recommend this hub to anyone who is looking for a stylish, efficient way to expand the ports on your laptop. It retails for
